The Niger State Government has announced plans to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to transform the agricultural and health sectors in line with global best practices.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made this disclosure during a side event hosted by the state government at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, USA.
Governor Bago, widely referred to as the farmer governor, said his administration is committed to attracting investors to drive development and improve the lives of citizens. He explained that partnerships with development organizations will be crucial in achieving these goals.
According to him, the state will collaborate with partners to integrate technology into agriculture, with plans to clear 2.5 million hectares of land for crop production within the next two years. The initiative is expected to promote food sufficiency, encourage contract farming, and attract foreign investment, particularly from Nigerians in the diaspora.
In the health sector, Governor Bago revealed that AI will be applied in telemedicine to strengthen services across primary healthcare centres, ensuring wider access to healthcare in rural and remote communities.
Key stakeholders present at the event, including Zainab Ahmed, Group Executive Director at the World Bank; Muhammad Sani Dattijo, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; and Hajiya Aisha Ahmad Ndanusa, former Deputy Governor of the CBN, praised Bago’s New Niger Agenda. They described it as visionary and pledged support to advance his transformation drive, particularly in agriculture.
The Niger State side event at UNGA 2025 was themed: “Bridging the Gap: Subnational Development, Human Capital and Agric Transformation” and featured discussions on both challenges and opportunities for sustainable development.
