Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has urged the African Union (AU) to prioritize diplomacy as the most effective means of resolving conflicts across the continent. He made the call during a meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council at the level of Heads of State and Government, held on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

In his remarks, Shettima acknowledged the vital role of the AU’s Peace Support Operations (PSOs), which have been instrumental in peacekeeping and peace-enforcement missions in Africa. He emphasized that while military interventions may provide temporary stability, long-term peace and unity can only be achieved through dialogue, preventive diplomacy, and inclusive governance.

The Vice President also highlighted the need for African-led solutions to African problems, stressing that effective diplomacy would not only silence conflicts but also lay the groundwork for sustainable development, stronger institutions, and regional cooperation.

His intervention drew commendations from delegates and observers who described the message as both timely and visionary, coming at a period when insecurity and political instability remain major challenges across parts of the continent.
