Abuja — Amnesty International Nigeria has raised concerns over the continued harassment and unlawful detention of activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore since November 2019.
According to the organization, Sowore has been subjected to a series of politically motivated investigations, sham trials based on bogus charges, and persistent intimidation. His social media accounts have also been reportedly targeted by the Department of State Services (DSS) without any legal justification — a move Amnesty International says violates Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution [as amended] and international human rights law.
Amnesty International stressed that Sowore’s demands are legitimate and straightforward: an end to impunity, corruption, and governance manipulated for the benefit of those in power and their close allies.
“The authorities must allow Sowore and other activists and journalists to freely carry out their activities without harassment, intimidation, or fear of reprisals,” the statement read.
The group further described Sowore’s unfair prosecution as part of a broader restriction of civic space and an escalating crackdown on human rights in Nigeria.
