Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has revealed that she bears no grudges against individuals who turned their backs on her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during the intense 2023 general elections.
The disclosure comes in her recently published 52-page book, “The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things.” The publication offers an intimate account of her spiritual reflections, the political hurdles faced during her husband’s campaign, and the lessons she learned from what she described as a challenging but faith-strengthening period.
According to Mrs. Tinubu, the events surrounding the 2023 polls exposed the fragility of political loyalty, with several figures whom the President had trusted choosing not to stand by him at crucial moments. Despite the disappointment, she explained that she deliberately chose the path of forgiveness, inspired by her Christian convictions.
She highlighted how she reflected on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who, despite betrayals and hostility, never ceased in his mission of love and service. Drawing from this example, the First Lady said she resolved to let go of bitterness and to continue supporting her husband with grace and strength.
“Forgiveness is a choice I made, not for those who hurt us, but for my own peace and spiritual growth,” she wrote. “Holding on to pain and betrayal only prolongs suffering. I would rather use my life as a testimony that peace and gratitude bring healing.”
The book goes beyond politics, presenting personal insights into her life as a wife, mother, and public figure. It narrates the demands of balancing family life with national responsibilities and provides readers with stories of her resilience in times of political turbulence.
Analysts have described the First Lady’s stance as significant, especially in a political environment often marked by deep-seated grudges and divisions. By publicly forgiving perceived political betrayers, Mrs. Tinubu sets a tone of reconciliation at a time when Nigeria is grappling with economic reforms, governance challenges, and the need for unity.
Her message is also likely to resonate with many citizens who, like her, have had to confront betrayal or disappointment in their own lives. She encourages Nigerians to adopt gratitude and forgiveness as a way of healing personal and collective wounds.
With “The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things,” Mrs. Tinubu not only provides a memoir but also offers a guide for reflection on how faith and forgiveness can shape personal growth and national leadership.
