Pharmacists in Bayelsa State have been urged to adopt more strategic approaches in drug formulation, emphasizing safety, efficacy, and affordability, to enhance access to medications across the health sector. The call was made by the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, during the 2025 World Pharmacists Day celebration held at the Emis Event Center in Yenagoa on Thursday, 25th September 2025.
Prof. Brisibe commended the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society and all pharmacists in the state, describing them as “warriors” who play indispensable roles in advancing healthcare systems. He highlighted their contributions in medication management, patient care, public health, and regulatory compliance, noting that pharmacists are vital in maintaining the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
Emphasizing the need for innovation and research, the Commissioner urged pharmacists to focus on drug formulation to help curb the proliferation of substandard drugs in the country. According to him, such measures would not only improve access to quality medications but also foster public trust in the healthcare system. He further stressed that partnerships between pharmacists, regulatory agencies, government bodies, and research institutions are essential to create an enabling environment for pharmaceutical innovation and equitable healthcare outcomes.
Prof. Brisibe assured participants that the Ministry of Health would continue collaborating with the state government to strengthen Bayelsa’s health sector, ensuring that residents benefit from sustainable and high-quality healthcare services. He also expressed gratitude to the Governor and Deputy Governor for their unwavering commitment to the development of Bayelsa, which he described as the “Glory of All Lands.”
The event drew wide participation from top government officials, including the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Jones Stow, and other senior officials. Attendees were reminded of the critical role pharmacists play in safeguarding public health, promoting research, and ensuring that medicines meet the highest standards of safety and efficacy.
The celebration also provided a platform for sharing knowledge, encouraging innovation, and discussing strategies to enhance drug formulation and distribution in the state. Participants called for continued investment in the pharmaceutical sector, improved regulatory oversight, and closer collaboration between government agencies and healthcare professionals to ensure that all citizens have access to affordable and reliable medications.
