The Georgetown Global Health Nigeria Ltd/GTE (GGHN), led by Chief Technical Officer Mercy Iyang, paid an advocacy visit to the Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KNSPHCMB), Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, to discuss strategies for deepening community engagement and strengthening partnerships under the Kano State Emirate Councils Committee on Health, Human Development, and Nutrition (KASECCOHDN).
The delegation included key advocates and researchers such as Anya Hirschfeld, Public Health Policy Researcher from Georgetown University, USA, and Dr. Shaawa Saeed, Technical Chairperson of KASECCOHDN. Discussions focused on aligning stakeholders with community engagement strategies to improve health outcomes, human development, and nutrition across Kano State, as well as designing a digital dashboard for the Emir of Kano to track progress, foster accountability, and provide real-time updates on health and nutrition indicators.
Speaking during the visit, Mercy Iyang highlighted GGHN’s commitment to inclusive partnerships that bridge policy, community, and technical expertise. She emphasized that aligning stakeholders under the emirate council’s vision will ensure a unified approach to addressing pressing health and nutrition challenges.
Anya Hirschfeld underscored the importance of evidence-based policies and data-driven decision-making in strengthening health systems, noting that the proposed dashboard will serve as a vital tool for policymakers and traditional leaders.
Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim welcomed the initiative, expressing readiness to collaborate with GGHN, KASECCOHDN, and other partners in advancing the emirate councils’ health and human development agenda. He reiterated that the involvement of traditional leadership, especially the Emir of Kano, is crucial for sustainable community buy-in and ownership.
Dr. Shaawa Saeed stressed that KASECCOHDN leverages traditional institutions to improve health and nutrition outcomes and noted that multi-stakeholder alignment is critical to achieving measurable impact.
The advocacy visit marks a key milestone in strengthening collaboration between government, civil society, academia, and traditional institutions, aiming to enhance health service delivery, nutrition, and human development across Kano State.
