The Niger State Police Command has confirmed the kidnapping of several individuals, including former State Independent Electoral Commission Commissioner Ahmed Mohammed, popularly known as Barrister Ahmed Lawyer, along with his driver.
Also among the victims is a former chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Mohammed Niworu, in addition to numerous other motorists traveling along the same route.
Police spokesman Superintendent Wasi’u Abiodun stated that the attackers opened fire, damaging a police patrol vehicle during the abduction. The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Monday, September 29, at a roundabout in Ibbi National Park, along the Zugurma-Ibbi to New Bussa road in the Mashegu Local Government Area.
According to Abiodun, the assailants targeted passengers from at least three vehicles along the highway. In response, the Niger State Police have deployed additional tactical units, working alongside other security agencies and local vigilante groups, to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the victims.
A source in the area disclosed that the victims were returning from Borgu when the attack occurred. Their mobile phones were reportedly left behind in the abandoned vehicles, suggesting a rapid and targeted operation by the perpetrators.
Authorities continue to intensify search efforts, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity along major roads in the state.
