The Lagos State Government has called on residents, particularly traditional rulers, to actively preserve the history, culture, and heritage of the state to benefit future generations.

The call was made by the Lagos State Head of Service (HOS), Mr. Olabode Agoro, on Tuesday during an event organized by the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB) to mark the 2025 International Archives Day celebration under the theme: “A Greater Lagos Rising: Preserving our Past, Inspiring our Future.”

Mr. Agoro highlighted the critical role of archives in governance, accountability, and public trust, describing LASRAB as “a compass to the future we are building.” He commended the bureau for initiatives that bridge the past with future generations and encouraged all stakeholders to support its mission.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, noted that LASRAB was established to safeguard Lagos’ history. He praised the Director-General for her efforts and stressed the importance of leveraging technology to enhance the preservation of the state’s heritage. He further emphasized that the misconception that “Lagos is a no man’s land” can be countered by preserving its cultural legacy.

In her welcome remarks, LASRAB Director-General, Ms. Toyin Ogunlana, described International Archives Day as a vital opportunity to reflect on Lagos’ history and culture. She encouraged citizens to actively participate in safeguarding records, stating, “Archivists are protectors of our heritage. They keep our identity. They rescue voices from fading. Our records are not only a job for archivists but for every Lagosian.” Ogunlana also revealed that the bureau had published a book to make the state’s history more accessible.

The Oniru of Iruland, Oba Omogbolahan Lawal, praised the Lagos State government and LASRAB for their achievements over the last two years, noting that the bureau has been effectively repositioned and continues to gain recognition locally and internationally.

The event underscored a unified call for Lagosians to embrace the preservation of history and heritage as a shared responsibility.
