The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, received a delegation from the British High Commission at the PDP National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
The delegation, led by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Montgomery, engaged in discussions with the PDP leadership on a wide range of issues, including the role of political parties in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State, and areas of mutual interest between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Ambassador Damagum, who was joined by members of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), welcomed the delegation and reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to building a strong, inclusive, and people-oriented democracy. He emphasized that credible elections, accountability, and respect for democratic institutions remain central to the party’s vision for Nigeria.
Speaking during the meeting, Damagum described the PDP as a party deeply rooted in the history of Nigeria’s democratic journey, adding that it remains committed to working with both local and international partners to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections. He also stressed that the forthcoming Anambra election is an opportunity to demonstrate the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions, urging all stakeholders to ensure that the process is peaceful and credible.
On his part, the British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery, commended the PDP leadership for its willingness to engage constructively with international partners. He reiterated the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that political parties remain key drivers of national stability and progress. Montgomery added that the UK is particularly interested in Nigeria’s upcoming elections, as they present another opportunity for the country to consolidate its democratic gains.
The meeting also explored broader issues such as good governance, accountability, and the need for political parties to prioritize the welfare of citizens. Both sides agreed that strong collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners is critical in addressing emerging challenges, including electoral credibility, political inclusiveness, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
According to insiders, the British High Commission is keen on ensuring that the Anambra off-cycle election is conducted under conditions that guarantee fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness. This aligns with the UK’s broader diplomatic strategy of supporting electoral reforms and promoting democratic values in Africa’s largest democracy.
Political analysts believe the visit signals the international community’s continued interest in Nigeria’s political affairs, particularly as the nation prepares for key elections. For the PDP, the engagement with the British High Commission is viewed as an opportunity to deepen relationships with partners who share its vision for a more democratic and prosperous Nigeria.
The interaction concluded with a mutual commitment to continued dialogue and cooperation aimed at advancing Nigeria’s democratic development and fostering strong bilateral relations between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
