The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Enugu Operations Office recently took part in a Search and Rescue (SAR) tabletop simulation exercise at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. The exercise, organized by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), was designed to test response capabilities, strengthen inter-agency communication and coordination, improve preparedness strategies, and identify areas for improvement in the event of an emergency, particularly within the aerodrome.

The simulation recreated an aircraft emergency scenario, allowing participants to explore the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders. Teams were split into syndicate groups to discuss the emergency scenario and develop response strategies.

During the exercise, the NEMA team shared expertise on Multi-Agency Coordination, the Incident Command System, use of SAR equipment, vertical and horizontal communication, and resource allocation. FAAN also delivered a PowerPoint presentation to complement the discussions.

Key highlights of the program included updating stakeholders’ contact information, drafting a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC), and a group photograph to commemorate the exercise. The simulation underscored the importance of collaboration, preparedness, and coordinated action in responding effectively to emergencies at Nigeria’s airports.
