A high-level road safety initiative was unveiled in Lagos on October 3, 2025, as the United Nations, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), football legend Didier Drogba, and global media company JCDecaux joined forces to address Nigeria’s “silent pandemic” of road crashes.
The launch took place at a press conference held at Black Diamond Hotel, Victoria Island, moderated by FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, mni. The event also featured the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Mr. Jean Todt, and Ms. Abimbola Gaga of JCDecaux as key panelists.
In his welcome address, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni, highlighted the agency’s ongoing policy efforts in alignment with the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, emphasizing the importance of behavioral change and adherence to traffic regulations to reduce fatalities on Nigerian roads.
Mr. Jean Todt officially launched the #MakeSafetyStatement Nigeria Campaign, stressing that “Road safety is everyone’s business every day. Small actions like wearing seatbelts, helmets, and driving safely save many lives.” He revealed that by late 2026, the campaign is expected to have expanded to 80 countries and nearly 1,000 cities worldwide.
Ms. Abimbola Gaga highlighted JCDecaux’s role in leveraging sustainable outdoor media to raise awareness and engage communities on road safety practices. Didier Drogba applauded the collaboration between global icons and local authorities, noting that public figures can inspire behavioral change and encourage responsible driving.
The initiative aims to reduce road traffic accidents and related fatalities in Nigeria through advocacy, education, and active citizen engagement. The campaign’s emphasis on small, daily safety actions underscores the message that every individual has a role in preventing accidents and saving lives.
Participants called for a united approach involving government agencies, private sector partners, civil society, and citizens to tackle the growing menace of road crashes. The #MakeSafetyStatement campaign represents a coordinated effort to transform Nigeria’s road safety culture and strengthen the protection of lives on the nation’s highways.
