A fresh legal action has been filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to prevent former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan from contesting in the 2027 presidential election.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, was instituted by Abuja-based lawyer, Johnmary Chukwukasi Jideobi, who is requesting the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining Jonathan from presenting himself to any political party as a presidential candidate in 2027 or any subsequent election.
Jideobi also urged the court to bar the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate, arguing that the former president has already been sworn in twice and is therefore constitutionally disqualified under Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
That section of the Constitution stipulates that any individual who has held the office of President for more than one term is ineligible to contest again, a clause that was introduced in the 2018 constitutional amendment.
As of the time of filing this report, the court has not delivered a ruling on the matter. However, legal experts believe the case could rekindle constitutional debates over presidential tenure limits, a question that had previously surfaced ahead of the 2023 general elections when similar concerns were raised about Jonathan’s eligibility.
The Federal High Court is expected to announce a hearing date soon as both parties prepare their legal arguments.
