The Abia State Executive Council has acknowledged the visit and commissioning of projects by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting the significance of the ongoing infrastructural developments under Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
This was disclosed on Monday, 6 October 2025, by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at Government House, Umuahia, following the week’s State Executive Council meeting.
Prince Kanu reported that the President, represented by the Minister of Works, Engineer Dave Umahi, commissioned projects including the renovated Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia and key roads in Aba, drawing attention to the state’s infrastructural growth. Residents of Aba and Umuahia were noted for turning out in large numbers to welcome the President and show support for the state government.
The State Executive Council also announced the commemoration of this year’s World Sight Day, running from 6 to 10 October, with free eye screenings, glasses, medication, and counseling. A symposium titled “Prioritizing Eye Health, A Collective Approach” will take place on Thursday at the JAAC building, inviting all residents with eye challenges to participate.
Prince Kanu further stated that ex-staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, who were owed salary arrears, have been substantially paid, with less than 10% remaining due to technical issues being resolved by the Office of the Commissioner for Finance and the Accountant General.
On youth and sports development, Prince Kanu highlighted the state’s participation in major events: the Para Badminton International Championships and the All-African Para Badminton Championship at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State where Abia ranked sixth overall, and the National Women’s Volleyball Division 1 League in Abuja, where the Excelsior South Volleyball team placed second.
The briefing was attended by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Administrator of Abia State Health Management Bureau, Dr Mrs Betty Emeka-Obasi, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
The State Government emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure, improve public services, and develop youth and sports initiatives across Abia State.
