The National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, led a delegation from the Commission on a courtesy visit to the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, mni, at the FRSC headquarters. The visit, held on October 7, 2025, was aimed at promoting data protection awareness and fostering inter-agency collaboration.
During the meeting, Dr. Olatunji thanked the Corps Marshal for receiving the team and highlighted the critical role of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in achieving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He stressed that the FRSC, as an agency that collects personal data daily—particularly through driver’s licenses and other services—serves as an essential data controller and processor.
Citing real-life examples of data misuse and its consequences, Dr. Olatunji urged the FRSC to strengthen its compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act). He also encouraged the Corps to ensure that its stakeholders, agents, and third-party service providers adhere to the Act and actively promote data protection awareness among staff.
Responding, Corps Marshal Mohammed welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ personal information. He confirmed that the Corps is already in compliance with the NDP Act and directed that all FRSC third-party service providers also meet the required standards.
The meeting concluded with Dr. Olatunji offering to provide data protection and privacy training for FRSC personnel. Both parties discussed additional areas for collaboration, including joint programs to enhance awareness and compliance across all FRSC operations. The Corps Marshal expressed appreciation for the gesture and pledged that the FRSC will continue to work closely with the NDPC to protect the personal data of Nigerians.
This engagement underscores the growing recognition of data protection as a national priority, particularly in sectors handling sensitive citizen information, and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and accountability across Nigeria’s public institutions.
