Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has signed into law the Gombe State Information Technology and Digital Economy Commission (GITDEC), marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to harness the digital economy for growth and development. The move, the Governor said, is a strategic response to the evolving global digital landscape and a bold step toward positioning Gombe as one of Nigeria’s leading tech-driven economies.

“This Commission will serve as the engine room for innovation, digital inclusion, and economic empowerment across our state,” Governor Yahaya stated, emphasizing the transformative potential of digital technologies in governance and economic growth.

GITDEC is tasked with driving policy formulation and implementation in ICT development, digital literacy, e-governance, and innovation. The Commission will also support skills development, nurture tech startups and innovation hubs, attract investment into the digital sector, and ensure cybersecurity and data protection across government platforms.

Following the signing, Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, officially handed over a copy of the newly assented law to the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Abdullahi Bappah Garkuwa, who will oversee the operationalization of the Commission.

Professor Garkuwa hailed the establishment of GITDEC as a pivotal moment in Gombe State’s march toward digital advancement. He noted that the new body would bridge the gap between traditional governance and modern technological solutions, creating fresh opportunities for youth, women, and entrepreneurs. “This is about unlocking the full potential of our people and economy through smart, inclusive innovation,” he said.

The creation of GITDEC follows a series of collaborations between the Gombe State Government and national and international technology organizations, including the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Uniccon Group, aimed at boosting digital infrastructure and capacity building in the state.

With this development, Gombe State joins other forward-thinking states in Nigeria leveraging the digital economy as a catalyst for innovation, job creation, and sustainable development, signaling a clear commitment to positioning the state as a hub for technology-driven growth.
