In a major step toward boosting economic independence and food security, the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has trained over 300 women in urban farming techniques as an alternative source of income.
The initiative, which aligns with Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s vision for economic sustainability, provided participants with hands-on experience in home gardening and livestock production. The training covered cultivation of essential crops such as pepper, tomatoes, and vegetables, as well as poultry, rabbit rearing, fishery, and piggery management.
Speaking during the closing session at the Ministry’s headquarters in Akure, Dr. Seun Osamaye, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, emphasized the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment and self-reliance.
“This training empowers you to drive community development and secure your households’ futures,” Dr. Osamaye said, urging the participants to approach their ventures with diligence and patience for sustainable success.
Also addressing the gathering, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, represented by Mr. Ojo, Director of Husbandry, reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to equipping women with the skills and opportunities needed to achieve financial independence and contribute to local food production.
Dr. Osamaye announced that the ministry plans to invite the women for additional training sessions, after which they will be empowered with resources to establish their agricultural enterprises. She reiterated that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration remains “totally committed to the growth and development of women across Ondo State.”
