DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO — Olukemi Ibikunle, United Nations Pioneer Award winner for Women in Judicial and Correctional Specialists, is leveraging her engineering expertise to transform prison infrastructure in traditionally male-dominated domains.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ibikunle’s work is reshaping the prison system. She spearheaded the construction of a reinforced security block in Kabare, designed a prison master plan adapted to local realities, and launched a biogas initiative in Uvira that produces clean energy while equipping inmates with new skills.
“Her expertise and commitment are transforming prison management, enhancing both security and rehabilitation opportunities for inmates,” a project spokesperson said.
Ibikunle’s initiatives highlight the growing impact of women engineers in social reform, sustainable infrastructure, and the advancement of correctional facilities globally.
