ZARIA, Nigeria — Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has unveiled plans to increase its admission capacity for students seeking to study medical sciences, a move aimed at addressing the high demand for medical education at the institution.
The announcement was made during the 2025 Sponsio Academica for medical students at the Abdullahi Mahadi Conference Centre on the Samaru Main Campus. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adamu Ahmed, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Raymond B. Bako, disclosed that the decision follows a recent ₦4 billion intervention approved by the Federal Government to enhance the university’s medical complex.
Prof. Ahmed explained that the intervention will enable ABU to expand facilities and resources, allowing the university to admit and train more students in Medicine and related health disciplines. Currently, the institution admits 180 students annually for the MBBS programme, despite receiving nearly 3,000 applications each year.
The Vice-Chancellor praised the dedication of parents, guardians, and staff of the College of Medical Sciences for their role in nurturing future medical professionals. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining high standards in medical education and encouraged graduands to represent ABU with integrity and uphold the institution’s values wherever their careers take them.
The expansion initiative is expected to increase access to medical education, providing more opportunities for aspiring doctors while addressing the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals in Nigeria.
