The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerian youths to distance themselves from internet fraud and other forms of economic crime, encouraging them instead to use their creativity and intelligence to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Olukoyede made this call on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, during the Kids and Teens STEAM Innovate Buildathon Bootcamp, a creative and educational initiative themed “Future Innovator: Young Minds, Big Ideas, Creating Tomorrow Today.” The event brought together children and teenagers between the ages of seven and eighteen, aiming to inspire innovation, critical thinking, and technological growth among the next generation of Nigerians.

Represented by the Acting Director of the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate, Assistant Commander Bawa Usman Kaltungo, the EFCC Chairman highlighted the crucial role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s future. He stressed that the same technological skills often misused in cybercrime could be harnessed for positive, life-changing innovations that would benefit both individuals and the country.

“A lot of negativity is going on among the youth, but I urge you not to go with the tide,” Olukoyede advised. “Desist from joining the bandwagon of internet fraud as there will be regrets in future. Your importance in our society cannot be taken lightly. Galvanize your thoughts in such a way that you can stand nationally or internationally when the opportunity presents itself. Your era is very different from ours.”

Olukoyede praised the creative potential and resilience of Nigerian youths, noting that their energy and imagination can drive technological and economic advancement if channeled into honest enterprise. He encouraged them to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship, and learning as the foundation for personal success and sustainable national growth.

The EFCC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to educating and mentoring young Nigerians through awareness campaigns and integrity-based programmes aimed at preventing crime before it starts.

The Buildathon Bootcamp, which focuses on STEAM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), provided participants with hands-on experience in innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving, demonstrating how creativity can be a powerful alternative to crime.
