Human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the recent wave of presidential pardons granted to several convicted individuals, describing the action as a “glaring display of hypocrisy.”
Reacting to the development, Sowore expressed outrage that while the President extended clemency to convicted criminals, including individuals found guilty of corruption, fraud, and drug-related offences, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, remains in detention despite numerous court rulings ordering his release.

In his statement, Sowore condemned what he termed the government’s “double standards,” pointing out that those “who looted the nation’s resources or betrayed public trust are now being forgiven, celebrated, and rehabilitated,” while Kanu — “a man who demanded self-determination and justice” — continues to languish in custody.
“President Bola Tinubu extended pardons to a long list of convicted individuals, including a cocaine trafficker serving a life sentence, an alleged coup plotter, Mamman Vatsa, the late Nnamdi Azikiwe and Herbert Macaulay, and even Farouk Lawan, the former lawmaker convicted for taking bribes on tape,” Sowore said.
“He also pardoned other known fraudsters and corrupt politicians. Yet, in all this, Tinubu refuses to even consider the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been unjustly detained for years despite multiple court orders mandating his freedom.”
Sowore argued that the government’s approach to justice exposes a deep-rooted political bias, where “those aligned with power are absolved while voices of dissent are criminalized.” He maintained that such selective justice undermines the rule of law and the very principles of democracy that the current administration claims to uphold.
The activist called for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, insisting that obeying court orders remains the true test of leadership and respect for the constitution.
