The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has honoured and rewarded members of Team Lagos for their outstanding performance at the 2025 National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, where the state made history by finishing first on the medal table for the very first time.

Team Lagos emerged as overall champions of the 9th National Youth Games, dethroning host Delta State with a total of 110 medals, including 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze. The reception in their honour, held at the Lagos State House, Ikeja, brought together athletes, coaches, officials, and top government dignitaries.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, while addressing the gathering, praised the young athletes for their exceptional dedication, discipline, and passion, which he said reflected the spirit of Lagos. He also commended the Lagos State Sports Commission, led by Director-General Lekan Fatodu, for its leadership and tireless efforts in driving youth and sports development in the state.

The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering young people through sports, pledging continued investment in modern sporting facilities and youth development programmes. He urged the athletes to remain focused, disciplined, and determined while balancing their sporting ambitions with education.

In recognition of their success, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced substantial cash rewards for medal winners, coaches, and officials. The gesture, described as unprecedented, was aimed at motivating young athletes and showing that hard work and excellence are rewarded in Lagos State. Non-medalists also received financial appreciation for their participation and contribution to the team’s victory, while the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission was recognised for its administrative support and commitment to excellence.

Director-General Lekan Fatodu described the Governor’s gesture as a milestone in the state’s sports history, noting that the reception went beyond financial incentives to provide lifelong inspiration for the athletes. He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision and consistent investment in sports infrastructure, saying it has created an enabling environment for young talents to thrive.

The event was attended by key government officials, including the Chairman of the House Committee on Youth, Sports and Social Development, Hon. Abiodun Orekoya; Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende; Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Alli-Balogun; and Senior Special Assistant to the President, Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye, among others.
