The Oyo State First Lady and Vice Chairperson of the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum, Engr. Tamunominini Makinde, has called for greater political participation and representation of women in governance, emphasizing that empowering the girl child is essential to achieving a more equitable and prosperous nation.

Speaking at the 6th edition of the TOS Symposium, held on October 11, 2025, at the National Assembly Library, Abuja, to mark the International Day of the Girl Child, Her Excellency underscored the theme of the event — “Girls Today, Leaders Tomorrow: Advancing Women’s Representation Through Policy.”

In her goodwill message, Engr. Makinde highlighted that education and empowerment remain the most powerful tools to help young girls realize their potential and take part in leadership and policy formulation.

"An educated girl understands that she belongs at the table where decisions are made and that she, too, has the power to shape policies that improve lives," she stated.

The First Lady commended the TOS Foundation for consistently using the symposium as a platform to champion women’s inclusion and representation in governance. She expressed strong support for the proposed constitutional reform advocating reserved seats for women in parliament, describing it not as favoritism but as a strategic move toward better governance.

"When women are included in decision-making, policies become more people-centered, communities flourish, and societies become more peaceful and prosperous," she added.

Her Excellency also urged stakeholders across government, civil society, and the private sector to work collaboratively to strengthen systems that support women’s political participation through mentorship, education, financial empowerment, and legislative reforms.
