The Nigeria Police Force has achieved a significant milestone in its ongoing reform and modernization agenda following the passage of the Police Institutes Establishment Bill and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by the National Assembly. These landmark legislations provide a robust legal framework for enhancing professionalism, securing sustainable funding, and improving welfare within the Force.

The Police Institutes Establishment Act consolidates and modernizes all police training and research institutions across Nigeria. It strengthens administrative structures, expands academic capacity, and ensures that training curricula meet global standards in law enforcement, leadership, investigation, technology, and community policing. This development enables the Force to coordinate professional training more efficiently, preparing officers for the complexities of modern-day policing.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Act reinforces the Force’s financial and administrative systems, guaranteeing consistent and transparent funding for operations, logistics, training, equipment, and welfare. These measures address long-standing gaps that have previously constrained the operational capacity of the Police.

The new laws also prioritize officer welfare, promising improved conditions of service, enhanced health and insurance benefits, better housing, and career development opportunities. They are designed to motivate personnel and foster a culture of professionalism, ethics, and citizen-focused service delivery.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the National Assembly for its commitment to strengthening the Police Force and expressed gratitude to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for assenting to the Bills. He described the move as a testament to the administration’s dedication to modernizing and professionalizing policing in Nigeria.

The IGP assured Nigerians that with this strengthened legal and institutional framework, the Police Force will intensify efforts to raise training standards, nurture world-class officers, and consolidate ongoing reforms aimed at delivering efficient, accountable, and citizen-focused policing nationwide.

This development is being hailed not only as a milestone for the Nigeria Police Force but also as a win for national security, professionalism, and public trust.
