Umuahia, October 13, 2025 — The Abia State Government has successfully concluded negotiations to acquire a 60% stake in the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) assets in the state following the acceptance of its offer by Interstate Electrics. The agreement sets in motion the next phase of the transaction, aimed at giving the state control over generation, regulation, and distribution of electricity in eight ring-fenced local government areas across the Central and North senatorial zones.

The development was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia, following the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. Prince Kanu explained that the acquisition aligns with the government’s vision to strengthen the power sector and drive economic growth in Abia. He assured residents that as the transaction unfolds, the public will be kept informed of key developments.

In a related announcement, the State Executive Council approved the restoration of power supply to Ohafia, a region that has been without electricity for several years. The Commissioner noted that this move will enhance the development plans of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA).

Prince Kanu further revealed that the government recently awarded contracts for five major roads, with two scheduled for flag-off on Friday, October 24: the 25 km Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road and the 13.1 km Ariam-Usaka Ring Road in Ikwuano LGA. The remaining roads include the 9.35 km Ihechiowa-Arochukwu Ring Road, 4.9 km Isieketa-Mba Itungwa-Mgbedeala Road, and 3.72 km Ogidi-Umuala Eziama Ntigha Road, all aimed at boosting commerce and accessibility in their respective communities.

The state will also join the rest of the world in celebrating World Food Day on October 15, themed “Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future”, at the International Conference Center, Umuahia. Prince Kanu highlighted the theme’s focus on collective action to achieve sustainable and resilient food systems and called on agricultural stakeholders to collaborate in combating hunger and improving nutrition.

Speaking at the briefing, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, confirmed the successful negotiations with Interstate Electrics and shed more light on the Ohafia power restoration project. He said the government is mobilizing resources in partnership with GODA to restore electricity to the area before the end of the year.

The press briefing was attended by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, and the State Director of Information, Lady Chika Orji-Nwoke, among other officials.
