The Federal Government has announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for students seeking admission into Arts and Humanities-related programs in Nigerian tertiary institutions. The Ministry of Education made the announcement on Tuesday, emphasizing that the revised guidelines apply to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprise Institutions across the country.

According to Folasade Boriowo, the ministry’s spokesperson, the updated National Guidelines for Entry Requirements are intended to remove unnecessary barriers for students while maintaining academic standards. She explained that while Mathematics will remain mandatory for science, technology, and social science programs, students applying for Arts and Humanities courses can now pursue their preferred programs without being required to meet a Mathematics criterion. The ministry noted that the revised framework is aimed at expanding access to tertiary education for students in Arts and Humanities while ensuring that academic quality is upheld.
