The Bayelsa State Government has explained that its decision to suspend the election of officers for the Ogbia Brotherhood, the umbrella socio-cultural organization of the Ogbia people, was taken to avert potential law and order challenges in the area. The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, disclosed this while meeting with aggrieved women from the Concerned Daughters of Ogbia at Government House, Yenagoa.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo said the government acted following disturbing security reports surrounding the planned elections, noting that the state leadership receives daily briefings on events across the state, some of which may not be known to local communities. He stressed that the suspension was in the best interest of the Ogbia people to prevent a situation from escalating into a serious crisis. The Deputy Governor further urged the community to remain united and avoid actions that could undermine the reputation of former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, who continues to enjoy global respect.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to development in Ogbia, Ewhrudjakpo cited ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Onuebum-Otuoke Road and the Ayama-Ogbia/Okodi Road, and assured that the suspension would be lifted once a conducive environment for the elections is established. The women representatives expressed their concerns over the growing disunity in the area due to the absence of functional leadership in the Ogbia Brotherhood and appealed for the timely conduct of the elections. Some attendees also criticized the heavy-handedness of police officers during attempts to disperse the peaceful protest.
The meeting included top state officials, such as the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Deputy Chief of Staff Comrade Gowon Toruyouyei, Commissioner for Science and Technology, Hon. Gibson Munalayefa, and the Chairman of Ogbia Local Government Area, Hon. Golden Jeremiah.
