The leadership of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), led by President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, has paid an unannounced solidarity visit to the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Lokoja, expressing deep concern over the poor working conditions faced by resident doctors in the facility.

The delegation, which included the NARD Secretary-General, Treasurer, and Chief of Staff to the President, decried the excessive workloads imposed on medical personnel. The team cited cases in the Department of Orthopedics where Dr. Victor Audu and Dr. Yomi were reportedly scheduled for 22 and 31 call duties respectively in October — a situation NARD described as “modern-day slavery.”

NARD maintained that no call duty should exceed 24 hours, describing the ongoing work pattern as inhumane and unsafe. The association reiterated its call for immediate government intervention to regulate duty rosters and safeguard doctors’ wellbeing, warning that failure to act before the expiration of its 30-day ultimatum could disrupt industrial harmony.

Resident doctors across Nigeria continue to face unsafe working conditions — including prolonged call hours that exceed 24 hours without rest or compensation. These conditions endanger both doctors and patients.

NARD called on the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to urgently implement a safe call duty schedule in line with international best practices, to protect the wellbeing of healthcare workers and ensure better patient outcomes.
