In a move that has sparked controversy, the Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State has reportedly ordered that officers be confined to their barracks ahead of the nationwide #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025.
The directive, which emerged from a confidential police memo obtained by leaked information, instructs that all personnel be restricted to barracks from 1800hrs until further notice. The order cites concerns over maintaining law and order during the peaceful demonstration organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, aimed at pressuring the government to release Nnamdi Kanu from detention.
Reacting to the development, Sowore criticized the measure as a panic-driven tactic by the police:
“After failing to obtain a legitimate court order to halt the unstoppable #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, the Nigeria Police Force has now resorted to a fresh wave of panic-driven measures.
In Ondo State, police authorities have reportedly ordered that officers sympathetic to the movement be confined to their barracks, an action that exposes the deep unease within the system.
Rather than engage with the legitimate and peaceful demands of citizens, the police are turning their energy toward internal repression and fear tactics, a clear sign that the movement’s message has struck a nerve.
The people are awake, and the movement remains unstoppable.”
The order, signed by Compol DFA Akure, emphasizes ensuring adequate security coverage while preventing any breakdown of law and order.
This latest development highlights the tension between citizens exercising their right to peaceful assembly and the state’s approach to crowd control ahead of high-profile protests.
