Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to relocate the Obiri-Ikwere dumpsite along Port Harcourt International Airport Road, highlighting environmental hazards and the negative impression it creates for visitors. The announcement came on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, following his inspection of a proposed alternative site at Omueke-Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area, which is being prepared as a permanent borrow pit.

He urged cooperation from the host community and commended the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) for their efforts in improving sanitation across the state.

During the visit, the governor also inspected the ongoing construction of 29 four-bedroom duplexes for Permanent Secretaries at Elimgbu, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area. Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Mr. Austin Ezekiel Hart, Fubara expressed satisfaction with the progress on the project.
