The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, which commenced on October 13, 2025. The decision was made following a series of engagements with the Federal Government and interventions from stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), students, and parents.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, disclosed that the union's National Executive Council (NEC) convened an emergency meeting from October 21 to 22, 2025, to assess the situation. The NEC concluded that while several issues remain unresolved, significant progress had been made in discussions with government representatives, particularly concerning the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement. This progress led to the decision to suspend the strike to allow for continued dialogue.
However, ASUU has issued a cautionary statement, warning that should the government fail to address the outstanding issues within a one-month window, the union may resume strike action without further notice. The suspended strike had been called to press for the conclusion of the renegotiated 2009 agreement, payment of withheld salaries, sustainable funding of public universities, and resolution of other welfare-related concerns.
The suspension of the warning strike has been met with relief from students, parents, and the broader academic community, who hope that the renewed negotiations will lead to a lasting resolution of the issues affecting Nigeria's public universities.
