The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two men, including the leader of a masquerade cultural group, for allegedly orchestrating an armed blockade, extorting money, and causing public disturbances in the state.

The suspects, identified as 45-year-old Uwem Umanah and 34-year-old David Michael, were apprehended after a concerned citizen alerted authorities to the violent activities of a masquerade group. According to the police, members of the group, armed with machetes, spears, and sticks, blocked a major highway, assaulted passersby—including NYSC members—and demanded money from motorists and pedestrians.

Police operatives quickly mobilized to the scene, arresting Uwem Umanah, who was identified as the mastermind. Further investigation led to the apprehension of David Michael, who was caught in full masquerade regalia while preparing to invade the area. Both suspects have been charged to court following a thorough investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, fsi, emphasized the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and order, warning that acts of lawlessness disguised as cultural activity will not be tolerated. He urged residents to continue providing timely information to aid the police in keeping communities safe.
