The Akwa Ibom State Government has suspended the Village Head of Ikot Umo Essien, Chief Monday Benjamin Esu, in Essien Udim Local Government Area, over allegations of terrorism and criminal activities. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, in Uyo.

The suspension, effective for six months, is intended to allow a full-scale investigation into various allegations against Chief Esu. According to the statement, the Village Head is accused of instigating acts that threaten peace and security, including the sponsorship of vandalism and theft at newly constructed shops in Ikot Ekpenyong Community Market, a neighbouring village.

The statement recalls that in February 2024, hoodlums reportedly from Ikot Umo Essien Village attacked the local market in Ikot Ekpenyong Community, demolishing, vandalizing, and looting newly constructed shop blocks, a project facilitated by the immediate past member representing Ikot Ekpene Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Nsikak Ekong.

The attackers also destroyed a Fadama-sponsored borehole and VIP lavatory, stealing items including aluminium roofing sheets, windows, doors, overhead tanks, a water pump, and a generator. Residents were reportedly intimidated, creating fear within the community.

A fact-finding mission led by Commissioner Archibong confirmed the extent of the damage and traced some of the looted items to the village council hall of Ikot Umo Essien, implicating Chief Monday Esu as the prime suspect.

During his suspension, Chief Esu has been ordered to hand over all government property in his possession to the Village Council Secretary. The Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs will continue the investigation into the allegations to ensure accountability and uphold security in the area.
