The Federal Government of Nigeria has mandated that all air ticket sales within the country must now be conducted in naira, ending the longstanding practice of pricing tickets in U.S. dollars.

The directive, to be enforced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), is aimed at strengthening the naira and reducing pressure on the foreign exchange market.

The National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA) has welcomed the policy, noting that dollar-only ticketing had excluded many local agents from fully participating in the sector. NANTA President Yinka Folami described the move as “a step toward fairness and economic stability.”

Local airline Air Peace has already implemented naira-based ticketing, and NANTA has urged foreign carriers operating in Nigeria to adopt the same system.

Analysts, however, caution that implementation challenges may arise, particularly regarding exchange rate risks and fund repatriation for international airlines. Despite these concerns, the move is widely seen as a significant step in supporting domestic currency usage and economic sovereignty.
