The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the ongoing Anambra State election, George Moghalu, has described the electoral process as “scandalous and deeply embarrassing,” condemning widespread reports of vote buying across the state.

Speaking with journalists on Saturday at his residence in Nnewi North Local Government Area, Moghalu criticized what he called a “systemic failure” of the authorities to curb electoral malpractice despite the heavy deployment of security personnel.

“The situation is scandalous and very embarrassing. The issue of vote buying is no longer speculation,” Moghalu said. “It happened very aggressively during the last by-election, and this time, I’ve been receiving reports of the same thing happening again.”

He urged security agencies to take decisive action against offenders, warning that vote buying undermines the credibility and integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.

“With the level of security deployment in Anambra for this election, I expect that vote buyers should have been apprehended and stopped by now,” he stated.

Moghalu reaffirmed his confidence in his campaign and commitment to due process, describing the trend as “most unfortunate.” He emphasized that democracy loses meaning when citizens’ votes are bought and sold.

“I remain optimistic. I’ve done everything according to the rules, so I sleep peacefully and watch things unfold. One of the things I offer the people is my wealth of experience, both in the public and private sectors. I always encourage voters to verify who I am,” he added.

The Labour Party candidate’s remarks come amid increasing public concern over reports of financial inducements at polling units across several LGAs, despite assurances from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies of a transparent and credible exercise.
