The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to immediately reconsider and reverse the appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The call comes in the wake of a report by Sahara Reporters, which highlighted that Prof. Amupitan previously authored a legal brief titled, “Legal Brief: Genocide in Nigeria – The Implications for the International Community.”
The SCSN expressed concern that the publication may raise questions about the impartiality and credibility of the electoral commission under Prof. Amupitan’s leadership, urging the presidency to act swiftly to maintain public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Observers note that the development adds to the ongoing scrutiny of INEC appointments, emphasizing the need for transparency and perceived neutrality in managing elections across the country.
