Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has again stirred public anger following his recent comments defending Fulani herdsmen and bandits, saying they are not aggressors but people “on a revenge mission” who are ready for peace talks — unlike members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), whom he accused of seeking to divide the country.
Speaking in his usual tone of sympathy toward armed groups, Sheikh Gumi claimed that the Fulani herdsmen and bandits do not attack innocent citizens without provocation, but rather retaliate for wrongs done to them. He described them as misunderstood individuals who could embrace peace if the government engaged them in dialogue.
> “The Fulani herdsmen and bandits are not attacking people out of hatred or religion. They are on a revenge mission, but they are ready for peace talks,” Gumi reportedly said. “Unlike IPOB that wants to leave Nigeria, these ones are willing to remain and make peace,” he added.
His remarks have triggered widespread criticism from Nigerians who view them as insensitive and misleading, especially in light of the thousands of lives lost, communities destroyed, and families displaced by bandit attacks across the North and parts of the Middle Belt.
Critics argue that Sheikh Gumi’s consistent attempt to justify or rationalize the actions of violent groups undermines national unity and the sacrifices of security forces battling insurgency and banditry. Many have questioned his motives and moral compass, wondering why a religious leader of his influence continues to defend groups responsible for killings, kidnappings, and mass displacement.
Observers also questioned the logic behind comparing armed bandits — who have terrorized rural communities and schoolchildren — with IPOB, a secessionist movement. They said such comparisons not only distort reality but also risk fueling division and confusion among the public.
Security analysts are calling on religious leaders to use their platforms responsibly, to preach peace and national cohesion rather than defending those who perpetuate violence.
