Maiduguri, Borno State – Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has announced a new initiative to sponsor indigent youths for degree programs in high-value fields such as Piloting, Aeronautical Engineering, and related disciplines.

The directive was given on Tuesday during a meeting at the Government House in Maiduguri with Mr. Issac Balami, founder of Issac Balami University of Aeronautics and Management (IBUAM).

Governor Zulum emphasized that the selection process will focus solely on merit, giving priority to academically talented youths who cannot afford the high cost of such programs. “I don’t want anyone close to the governor, the deputy governor, or the commissioner to be selected. Purely on merit! Mind you, I have to vet the list after the selection process,” he stated.

Zulum assured that the Borno State Government will provide full support to ensure the success of the program. The Commissioner for Education and the Executive Secretary of the Scholarship Board have been tasked with coordinating the selection process and liaising with IBUAM.

In his address, Mr. Balami revealed that his institution will provide free training for an initial batch of Borno indigenes in Aircraft Planning and Aircraft Technology. He explained that the initiative is his way of giving back to the society, inspired by a scholarship he received years ago from the Borno State Government, which laid the foundation for his career in aeronautics.

Under the program, one youth from each of Borno’s 27 local government areas will be selected for training, opening a pathway for the state’s youths to pursue careers in the aeronautical sector.

Governor Zulum hailed the initiative as a strategic step towards empowering Borno youths with high-value skills, contributing to the state’s long-term development.
