Abuja, Nigeria – Tensions flared in the Senate today as Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe engaged in a heated confrontation with a northern senator over a provocative comment concerning Nnamdi Kanu.
Eyewitnesses reported that the northern senator allegedly stated, “Nnamdi Kanu will die in prison and nothing will happen,” prompting an immediate and angry response from Abaribe. Standing sharply, he warned his colleague to refrain from making such statements, stressing that Nigeria is too fragile for reckless comments about ongoing court cases.
The chamber erupted into shouting, forcing other lawmakers to intervene and separate the two senators before the situation escalated further. Attempting to restore order, another senator reminded the assembly, “This is the National Assembly, not a battlefield. We must show restraint, even when we disagree.”
The incident highlights the deep sensitivities surrounding political and legal issues in Nigeria, as well as the challenges lawmakers face in maintaining decorum amid rising tensions.
