Four of the six directors of the Federal Ministry of Defence, who were abducted on November 10 along the Kabba–Lokoja highway, have regained their freedom, the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) confirmed on Friday.

The officials were travelling from Lagos to Abuja to attend a promotion exam when armed assailants intercepted their vehicle and kidnapped them. The kidnappers reportedly demanded ₦150 million for the release of all six victims, heightening anxiety among families and colleagues.

The rescued directors – Helen Ezeakor, C. A. Ladoye, Ngozi Ibeziakor, and Essien Catherine – are currently receiving medical care. Meanwhile, C. A. Emeribe and J. A. Onwuzurike remain in captivity as authorities continue efforts to secure their release.

ASCSN stressed the urgency of the ongoing search, stating: “The search must continue until the remaining officers are safely recovered.” The union also highlighted the risks of long-distance travel for civil servants, saying: “Long-distance travel exposes civil servants to unnecessary risks.”

While it remains unclear whether a ransom was paid for the release of the four directors, analysts note that in many Nigerian kidnapping cases, victims are often freed after ransom negotiations. ASCSN also commended government measures aimed at boosting security on major highways.

The incident underscores the persistent threats to civil servants and travellers on Nigeria’s highways, prompting renewed calls for decentralised exams and improved security protocols.
