Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called for the swift release of presidential election results in Guinea-Bissau, warning that recent developments in the West African nation amount to a deliberate attempt to undermine democracy.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Jonathan described the situation as “not a coup but a stage-managed plot by President Umaro Embalo to undermine democratic governance.” He emphasized that the country’s transparent electoral process had been hijacked, and urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to take decisive action to safeguard democratic principles.
Jonathan was part of a joint election monitoring mission organized by the African Union, ECOWAS, and the West African Elders Forum, which oversaw the presidential election held on November 23, 2025. The former president and other African leaders were temporarily stranded during the political disruption in Guinea-Bissau.
After the incident, Jonathan and his team returned to Nigeria aboard a presidential jet from Ivory Coast, arriving at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on November 27.
The former president’s statements underscore growing concerns over electoral integrity in Guinea-Bissau and highlight the urgent need for regional intervention to protect democratic governance.
