The Osun State Police Command has dismissed widespread reports claiming that Nigerian singer Adebayo Adeleke, popularly known as B-Red, survived an assassination attempt in Osogbo, insisting that preliminary investigations do not support allegations of a planned attack on the entertainer. The development followed intense public reactions after the Osun State Government initially described the incident as a serious security threat involving the son of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The controversy began after reports emerged that B-Red was allegedly chased by suspected hoodlums around the Oke Fia area of Osogbo, close to the Osun State Government House. According to accounts circulated online and statements attributed to the singer, the incident occurred while he was returning from Alekuwodo Market on Wednesday afternoon.
B-Red, who is also a cousin of Nigerian music star Davido, reportedly claimed that motorcycle riders wearing political insignia attempted to surround his vehicle under the Okefia Bridge area before a white Toyota Venza allegedly joined the pursuit. He said the situation escalated into a high-speed chase through several streets in Osogbo as the individuals repeatedly attempted to block his movement.
According to the account, the singer eventually drove into the Osun State Government House premises, where he found safety. B-Red further alleged that he identified one of the individuals involved as “Asiri Eniba,” whom he described as a known political thug associated with the opposition All Progressives Congress in the state.
Following the incident, the Osun State Government reacted strongly through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi. In an official statement, the government described the development as an assassination attempt and demanded immediate police action against those allegedly involved. The state government said the matter represented a major security concern and urged law enforcement authorities not to treat it lightly.
The incident quickly generated widespread attention across Nigeria due to the political profile of the Adeleke family and B-Red’s close relationship with Davido, one of Africa’s biggest music stars. Social media platforms became flooded with reactions, with supporters of both major political parties in Osun exchanging accusations over the alleged attack.
However, the Osun State Police Command later pushed back against the assassination narrative. Police authorities stated that investigations conducted so far did not establish evidence supporting claims that gunmen or assassins attempted to kill the singer. According to police sources, the situation appeared more consistent with a traffic-related altercation and political misunderstanding than a coordinated assassination attempt.
The police reportedly said there was no evidence of gunfire, weapons discharge, or direct violent confrontation during the incident. Authorities also noted that no injuries or fatalities were recorded, while investigations were continuing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Security analysts say the conflicting narratives surrounding the incident reflect the increasingly tense political climate in Osun State, where rivalry between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition APC has remained intense since the 2022 governorship election. Governor Ademola Adeleke defeated former governor Gboyega Oyetola in a highly contested election that significantly reshaped political alignments in the state.
Since assuming office, Adeleke’s administration has repeatedly accused opposition figures of attempting to destabilize the state politically, while APC leaders have consistently criticized the governor’s handling of governance and security issues. The latest controversy involving B-Red has therefore added another layer of political tension to the already charged atmosphere in Osun.
The incident also renewed public discussion about the growing intersection between politics and celebrity culture in Nigeria. B-Red and Davido have both been visibly involved in political campaigns supporting Governor Adeleke over the years, with Davido playing a particularly active role during the 2022 governorship election campaign. Their public political alignment has often attracted both support and criticism online.
Observers noted that the rapid spread of assassination claims before official police findings highlighted the growing influence of social media narratives in shaping public perception during politically sensitive incidents. Within hours of the initial reports, multiple blogs and online platforms had circulated dramatic headlines suggesting an attempted killing before authorities released preliminary findings.
The Osun State Police Command has maintained that investigations remain ongoing and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims capable of escalating political tensions or causing panic. Authorities also warned against the circulation of misleading narratives capable of undermining public peace and security in the state.
Despite the police clarification, supporters of the Adeleke family continue insisting that the incident should not be dismissed lightly. Some political supporters argued online that the pursuit itself constituted a serious threat regardless of whether weapons were used, while others demanded a full criminal investigation into the identities of those allegedly involved.
The incident comes amid broader national concerns over insecurity, political violence, and attacks involving public figures across Nigeria. Security agencies have recently faced mounting pressure to improve intelligence gathering and strengthen public confidence amid rising fears over violent crime and politically linked confrontations in several parts of the country.
As investigations continue, neither Governor Ademola Adeleke nor B-Red has personally issued any further detailed public statement beyond the accounts already circulated through government channels and media reports. The police say updates will be provided if additional verified evidence emerges from ongoing inquiries into the incident.
