The Dangote Group has strongly dismissed widespread claims suggesting a fallout between Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu, describing the reports as false, malicious, and deliberately misleading. The company’s reaction followed the circulation of a viral social media post that alleged tensions between the two influential Nigerian business leaders over financing linked to the multibillion-dollar Dangote Petroleum Refinery project.

The controversy erupted after a post circulated widely on X, formerly Twitter, claiming that Dangote had sought financial support from close associates when construction of the Dangote Refinery allegedly faced funding challenges in 2021. According to the viral claims, Tony Elumelu, chairman of the United Bank for Africa and founder of Heirs Holdings, reportedly pledged financial assistance but later stopped communication with Dangote, leading to speculation of a strained relationship between both businessmen.

The post further alleged that other prominent Nigerian billionaires, including Femi Otedola, Mike Adenuga, and Abdulsamad Rabiu, stepped in financially to support completion of the refinery project. Claims circulated online suggested that business associates collectively raised hundreds of millions of dollars to assist Dangote at a critical stage of construction.

However, the Dangote Group swiftly denied the entire narrative. In an official statement issued by the company’s Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Anthony Chiejina, the organisation stated that neither Aliko Dangote nor the company made any statements remotely connected to the viral allegations. The statement described the reports as fabricated and baseless, insisting that they were designed to misinform the public and damage reputations.

The company particularly rejected claims that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals project was financed through personal borrowing from friends or associates. According to the statement, Dangote does not operate his businesses through informal personal lending arrangements and has never relied on friends to finance major industrial projects.

“As a matter of principle, Aliko Dangote neither finances his projects through personal borrowing from friends nor engages in lending arrangements of that nature,” the company stated, while challenging individuals spreading the claims to provide verifiable evidence to support their allegations.

The Dangote Group also directly addressed the alleged dispute with Tony Elumelu, firmly denying any estrangement between the two businessmen. The company stressed that Dangote and Elumelu continue to maintain what it described as a longstanding and cordial relationship built over years of mutual business respect and cooperation.

Industry observers note that both men remain among Africa’s most influential corporate figures and have frequently appeared together at major business and economic events across the continent. While Dangote built his business empire around cement, sugar, petroleum refining, and industrial manufacturing, Elumelu has become globally known for banking, investment, and entrepreneurship development through the Tony Elumelu Foundation. Both businessmen have consistently advocated for private-sector-led economic growth across Africa.

The latest controversy has also drawn attention to the enormous financial scale of the Dangote Refinery project, regarded as one of Africa’s largest industrial investments. Located in Lagos, the refinery reportedly cost about 20 billion dollars and took over a decade to complete. The facility began phased operations after years of construction delays, financing concerns, and technical adjustments.

The refinery has remained central to Nigeria’s economic discussions because it is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products and ease pressure on foreign exchange demand. Nigerian authorities and industry analysts have repeatedly described the project as strategic to energy security and long-term industrial development.

The Dangote Group said it was increasingly alarmed by what it described as a growing pattern of fabricated statements, AI-generated materials, and unauthorized use of Dangote’s identity online. According to the company, false digital content involving Aliko Dangote’s name, image, and likeness has become more frequent in recent months, posing serious reputational and fraud risks.

The statement warned content creators, blogs, organisations, and digital platforms involved in spreading misleading information to stop immediately or risk legal consequences. The company indicated it was prepared to pursue legal action against individuals or platforms responsible for originating and distributing false reports connected to Dangote and the company’s operations.

The controversy emerged at a time when the Dangote Group is already attracting national attention over developments in Nigeria’s petroleum and aviation fuel markets. The company recently announced pricing adjustments for aviation fuel supplied from the Dangote Refinery, while Nigerian regulators continue efforts to stabilize fuel prices amid rising concerns from airline operators and consumers.

Analysts say the speed with which the claims spread online highlights growing concerns over misinformation, manipulated digital content, and AI-generated narratives targeting high-profile public figures and corporations. In recent years, Nigerian business leaders, politicians, and celebrities have increasingly become targets of fabricated online reports designed to provoke controversy or attract engagement on social media platforms.

Despite the online speculation, there has been no public indication from either Dangote or Elumelu suggesting any deterioration in their relationship. Neither businessman has personally commented beyond the official corporate response issued by the Dangote Group, but the company insisted that the claims remain entirely false and unsupported by evidence.

The Dangote Group concluded by reaffirming its commitment to industrialisation, economic self-sufficiency, and sustainable development across Africa while insisting it would continue protecting its corporate reputation against misinformation and malicious digital campaigns.
