10 Vigilantes Confirmed Dead After Bandit Attack in Bakura

At least 10 vigilantes have been killed in a violent attack by armed bandits in Damri town, located in Bakura Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in north-western Nigeria.

Security and community sources confirmed that the attack occurred during a patrol operation carried out by local vigilante members, who were engaged in routine surveillance activities aimed at protecting rural settlements from bandit incursions.

The attackers reportedly ambushed the vigilantes in a coordinated strike, overwhelming them with heavy gunfire before fleeing the scene. The victims were confirmed dead on the spot, while other members of the group were said to have escaped the attack.

Bakura LGA has remained one of the most volatile areas in Zamfara State, frequently affected by armed banditry involving kidnapping, cattle rustling, and repeated assaults on rural communities and local security networks.

Vigilante groups in the state operate as community-based security volunteers who assist formal security agencies in responding to bandit threats, particularly in areas where military and police presence is limited due to difficult terrain and insecurity.

The latest attack highlights the growing risks faced by these local defence groups, who have increasingly become direct targets of armed gangs operating across Zamfara’s rural corridors.

As of the time of filing this report, no official names of the deceased vigilantes have been released, and authorities are expected to carry out identification and notification procedures in line with security protocols.

The Zamfara State Government, under Governor Dauda Lawal, has repeatedly condemned ongoing bandit attacks in the state and has supported federal security operations aimed at restoring stability across affected communities.

Security agencies are expected to intensify patrols and launch follow-up operations in the Damri axis to track the perpetrators and prevent further attacks in surrounding villages.

Zamfara remains one of the epicentres of armed banditry in north-western Nigeria, where rural communities continue to face recurring violence despite ongoing military operations and security interventions.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations into the attack continue.
