Nigerian security forces under the Joint Task Force (JTF) operating in the North-East have successfully repelled a coordinated attack by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in parts of Borno State, in an operation that also led to the arrest of alleged terrorist collaborators and the rescue of kidnapped civilians.
According to military sources, the operation was carried out by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, a counterinsurgency mission led by the Nigerian Armed Forces in the North-East. The engagement took place in the early hours of the day when armed militants attempted to infiltrate military positions in rural communities within the state.
The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, is overseeing ongoing operations in the region, while field operations were coordinated by brigade commanders deployed across frontline sectors in Borno State.
Military officials confirmed that the attackers were intercepted and forced to withdraw after troops engaged them in a sustained firefight, preventing what could have escalated into coordinated assaults on nearby communities and security bases.
Following the initial encounter, troops launched a follow-up clearance operation that resulted in the arrest of several individuals suspected of acting as informants and logistics support for insurgent groups. These suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation by intelligence operatives.
Security authorities also confirmed the rescue of kidnapped victims during the operation. The victims were discovered in locations linked to insurgent hideouts and have since been evacuated to a military medical facility for treatment and debriefing before reunification with their families.
The Defence Headquarters spokesperson, Major General Markus Kangye, confirmed that the operation aligns with ongoing counterterrorism efforts aimed at degrading the capabilities of Boko Haram and ISWAP factions operating in the Lake Chad Basin area.
Borno State, which remains the epicentre of Nigeria’s over decade-long insurgency, continues to witness intermittent attacks despite sustained military pressure. The latest incident underscores ongoing attempts by insurgent groups to regroup in remote forest corridors and along border communities.
Local government areas within the affected axis, including parts of Gwoza and Damboa axis (commonly identified operational zones in previous security reports), have remained key flashpoints in the counterinsurgency campaign.
Military sources noted that intelligence-led operations have become central to recent successes, with the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) and other security units playing a critical role in tracking movement patterns of insurgent cells and suspected collaborators.
Residents of nearby communities have been urged by security officials, including local commanders and civil authorities, to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies as clearance operations continue across rural areas.
The arrested suspects are believed to be part of a wider network providing logistical assistance, including food supply routes, surveillance information, and communication support to armed groups operating in the region. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their involvement.
Humanitarian workers in Borno State have also been alerted following the incident, as the region continues to host thousands of internally displaced persons affected by years of insurgency-related violence. Agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are expected to coordinate support for rescued victims.
The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which includes Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, continues to support regional counterterrorism operations around the Lake Chad Basin, where insurgent groups frequently cross borders to evade military pressure.
Security analysts note that while Boko Haram has weakened significantly compared to its peak years, splinter factions such as ISWAP remain active, particularly in rural and riverine areas where terrain limits rapid military access.
The Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to sustaining offensive operations under Operation Hadin Kai, emphasizing that coordinated ground and air missions will continue to target insurgent hideouts and disrupt their supply chains.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the arrested suspects or the exact number of rescued victims, citing ongoing operational security procedures.
The Defence Headquarters is expected to issue a more detailed operational update as investigations and debriefing of rescued civilians continue.
Security officials have assured residents that intensified patrols and clearance operations will remain active across vulnerable communities in Borno State to prevent further attacks and stabilize affected areas.
