A young politician and community mobilizer, Samuel Obe Ngobe, was shot dead by two masked gunmen who stormed a hotel he owned in Ebubu, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, on May 22, 2026. The assailants, arriving on a motorcycle, went straight to the politician and opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising fresh concerns over targeted killings and escalating insecurity in the region.
According to multiple reports, the two suspects were masked and carried out the attack with chilling precision. They reportedly seized cell phones belonging to hotel workers during the operation, an apparent attempt to prevent them from raising an alarm. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is ongoing. "Investigation is ongoing on the matter," Kaborlo told journalists when contacted on Monday. The police have not disclosed any arrests or named any suspects in connection with the killing.
The tragedy has cast a spotlight on the precarious security situation in Eleme LGA, an area that has witnessed sporadic violence. The hotel where the assassination took place was reportedly owned by the deceased, adding a layer of shock to an already devastating event.
As the community mourns the loss of a man described as a community mobilizer, residents are calling for swift justice. The police have urged anyone with information to come forward as they work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing.
