The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has deepened its consumer education and petroleum safety campaign with a series of public sensitisation engagements across markets, transport terminals, women’s groups and tertiary institutions in the Volta and Ashanti Regions of Ghana. The exercise, led by the Authority’s Consumer Services Directorate, focused on petroleum safety practices, fuel quality assurance, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) handling, consumer rights, complaint reporting mechanisms, and the dangers associated with fuel siphoning from accident scenes involving Bulk Road Vehicles. The campaign, which took place over the past month, is part of the NPA’s ongoing effort to reduce fuel-related accidents, protect consumers from adulterated products, and empower the public with knowledge about their rights at the pump.

Speaking during the engagements, the Director of Consumer Services, Mrs. Eunice Budu-Nyarko, urged motorists and consumers to remain vigilant during fuel purchases. She advised them to confirm the type of fuel being dispensed, monitor dispenser screens for accurate readings, and always demand receipts after every transaction. Mrs. Budu-Nyarko also warned against the dangerous practice of siphoning fuel from tanker trucks involved in accidents, noting that such acts have led to devastating fires and loss of life in the past. “Fuel safety is a shared responsibility. We need consumers to be alert and report any suspicious activity at fuel stations to the NPA,” she said.

In the Volta Region, the NPA team covered the Ho Market and Lorry Park, the Ho Technical University, the Ho Nursing Training College, and engaged with women’s groups in Hohoe. Technical presentations were delivered by Ing. Johnson Gbagbo Jnr, Head of Consumer Data Analytics and Market Intelligence, and Maureen Adwoa Duori, Head of Consumer Education and Stakeholder Engagement. They explained how consumers can identify adulterated fuel, the importance of proper LPG cylinder storage, and the correct procedures for reporting complaints through the NPA’s toll-free lines and social media platforms. In the Ashanti Region, similar engagements took place at the Bantama Market, Fomena Nursing Training College, Kumasi Technical University, and the Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College Anyinasuo Campus. Regional managers and staff supported the outreach, distributing educational leaflets in English and local languages to ensure accessibility.

The NPA’s campaign comes at a time when Ghana has recorded several fuel-related incidents, including petrol station fires and LPG explosions, many of which have been linked to poor handling practices and lack of consumer awareness. The Authority has been proactive in recent years, introducing measures such as the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) for LPG distribution and intensifying market surveillance to clamp down on fuel adulteration. The latest consumer sensitisation drive in the Volta and Ashanti Regions is expected to reach thousands of market women, transport operators, students and residents, equipping them with the knowledge to make safer choices. The NPA has indicated that the exercise will be extended to other regions in the coming months, as part of its mandate to ensure the safety and satisfaction of all petroleum consumers in Ghana.
