President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Governor Biodun Oyebanji on his emphatic re-election in Saturday's Ekiti State governorship election, describing the outcome as a clear demonstration of the people's trust in the All Progressives Congress and the governor's performance-driven leadership.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 21, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the people of Ekiti State for their peaceful and orderly conduct during the electoral process. Tinubu expressed satisfaction that the election was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, reflecting the maturity of the electorate and the strength of Nigeria's democratic institutions.
"I am delighted that the people of Ekiti State have reaffirmed their trust in Governor Oyebanji through this resounding victory. His re-election is a vote of confidence in his inclusive governance, the visible progress recorded across various sectors, and his unwavering commitment to the welfare of all Ekiti people," Tinubu said.
President Tinubu also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, election observers, and all stakeholders for their professionalism and dedication, which contributed to a free, fair, and credible electoral process. He called on other candidates and political parties to accept the outcome in good faith and join hands with Governor Oyebanji to move Ekiti State forward.
"I call on all political actors in Ekiti to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and unity. Elections are not an end in themselves but a means to advance the collective good of the people. We must now focus on governance and the continued development of Ekiti State," the President added.
Governor Oyebanji, who polled 319,224 votes to defeat his closest challenger, Dr. Wole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party who scored 40,543 votes, has become the first governor in the history of Ekiti State to win a re-election bid since the return of democratic rule in 1999. His victory across all 16 local government areas has been described as a landmark moment in the state's political history.
