The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong denial of a document circulating on social media purporting to be an official public notice containing the names of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates for Federal House of Representatives elections in Lagos State for the 2027 General Election. The Commission, in a statement released on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, categorically declared the document FAKE, misleading and fraudulent.
The Commission stated that it has not authorised or published any such notice, and the purported publication does not originate from any official INEC platform or process. "The signature appearing on the document does not belong to the Secretary to the Commission and is therefore fraudulent," the statement read.
INEC urged members of the public, political parties, stakeholders and the media to disregard the document in its entirety and rely only on information published through the Commission's official communication channels. The electoral body reiterated its commitment to providing timely, accurate and credible information on all electoral activities.
The fake notice had been circulating widely on social media platforms, causing confusion among political observers and members of the public ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Commission's swift denial is a warning against the spread of misinformation and an affirmation of its dedication to transparency in the electoral process.
The development underscores the challenges posed by the proliferation of fake news and disinformation in Nigeria's political space. As the 2027 elections draw closer, INEC has intensified efforts to counter false information and ensure that citizens receive only accurate and verified updates through its official channels.
Members of the public are advised to verify all electoral information through INEC's official website and verified social media handles.
