The Kano State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the manager of the Thomas Regional Water Scheme following allegations of sabotage, vandalism, and gross negligence that left critical water infrastructure looted and non‑functional, the government announced on Monday.
The suspension was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad‑Hashim, who expressed shock at the level of decay and criminal activity uncovered during a facility inspection. According to the commissioner, the Thomas and Ghari Regional Water Schemes, designed to supply water to three local government areas, have remained non‑functional for several years, with vital components stripped from generators and pumps.
“What I found was deeply troubling,” Hashim said. “We found almost all electrical wiring stripped from generators and pumps. A power project completed just three months ago in Thomas, which is yet to be commissioned, had already been looted.” The commissioner also revealed that security personnel hired to protect the plant were found farming on its grounds instead of carrying out their assigned duties.
The suspension takes immediate effect and is pending a full investigation into the alleged sabotage and vandalism of facilities installed by the government to end the lingering water scarcity crisis in the state. “Where criminal culpability is established, we will pursue full legal action,” Hashim warned.
The Kano State Government, under Governor Abba Kabir‑Yusuf, is currently rehabilitating the Chalawa and Tamburawa water treatment plants and has pledged to revitalise all regional water schemes across the state. Hashim called on residents to protect public assets, stating: “These public assets belong to all of us, and we all must protect them.”
