The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old man, Onipede Tajudeen Ojo, for allegedly stealing a police officer’s service bag and using its contents—including a camouflage uniform and a warrant card—to impersonate a serving officer, the command announced on Monday.

According to a statement posted on the Lagos Police Command’s official X handle on June 22, 2026, the suspect was apprehended after he allegedly stole a bag belonging to a police officer in the Mushin area of Lagos. The bag contained a camouflage uniform, a warrant card, a mobile phone, an ATM card, and other personal belongings, which the suspect later used to pose as a police officer.

“One suspect, Onipede Tajudeen Ojo, male, aged 22 years, was apprehended after allegedly stealing a police officer’s bag containing a camouflage uniform, warrant card, mobile phone, ATM card, and other personal belongings,” the police statement read. “The suspect reportedly wore the stolen police camouflage uniform in an attempt to impersonate a police officer.”

However, Ojo’s impersonation was uncovered after vigilant passersby observed that his conduct and mannerisms did not correspond with those expected of a genuine police officer. Their suspicion prompted them to accost and question him, during which he was discovered to be an impostor. He was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.

In a video circulating on social media, Ojo claimed that he had found the camouflage uniform, which carried the name tag of Inspector Jimoh Weheed, along Maryland Road in Lagos. However, further inquiries raised doubts about his explanation, leading to his arrest.

The police command confirmed that Ojo is currently in custody and that investigations are ongoing. He will be charged to court upon the completion of the inquiry.

While commending residents for their vigilance and civic responsibility, the police condemned all forms of jungle justice and warned against taking the law into one’s own hands, regardless of the offence allegedly committed.
